Organizing, Weekend 2

We've been kind of busy this weekend--birthday party for my FIL, had to run errands in Metro Crazyville yesterday, including trying to buy a gift for my mom for her birthday in our inky-binky shopping mall (I ended up finding a pretty shawl/wrap thing in Dress Barn that she can wear if the weather is how it is right now), and then went through my car to take out some Christmas stuff that needs to be put away. Apparently, last weekend, one of the people in the development had a guest of the sticky-fingered kind. He went to the neighbor's house, broke into her car, ransacked it, then went to one of Left-brain's friend's house, and tried to get into his brand-new truck. They know this because it snowed and they followed the dumb-arse's footprints back to his girlfriend's house. But the woman whose car was ransacked didn't press charges. Maybe turning the other cheek makes her feel good, but that means this dude has access to the rest of the neighborhood's vehicles. So I made sure mine had nothing to attract attention. I've had my car broken into 3 times--it may just be my personal hystrionics, but, when that happens, I feel quite violated. This neighborhood is supposed to be safe, but I am not so dense to think that it can't happen here.

I did manage to clean out under my side of the bed yesterday. Of course it's all stitching stuff--I swear I'm like a squirrel, I have deposits all over the house. I was looking for the chart for Icy--I think it's still under there, and I can't reach all the way to the middle. Left-brain may have to help with that. I am trying to, as I gather these things together, to immediately organize them--fabric goes into the drawers, magazines and charts into the boxes. It feels good to do this.

One of the questions I am trying to deal with in this whole process is how to handle the magazines, particularly the charts I want to do. Do I put them in a separate box? Pull 10 at a time, and put them in a basket? Write them in a notebook and hope I get to it at some point? I don't want to pull the charts from the magazines, because at some point, I might want to give the mag away at some point, or, as part of my master life plan, donate the entire collection to my alma mater to start an American Needlework library, and pulling it apart doesn't seem to jibe with that.

Any suggestions?

My first thought is putting them in magazine holders in some sort of order, by magazine or year or w/e, and then on the front or side, leaving yourself a note on which magazine and what page you'd like to stitch. I'd use a post-it note or something. If it's on the front, you can be reminded all the time that it's there! :)

I struggle with the magazine issue too Rachel. I wish I had an answer for you but I don't. I hope someone else has a brilliant idea and shares it with you!

We've had break-ins in our neighborhood and this is also supposed to be a good safe place. But sadly, things like that can happen anywhere. Better safe than sorry and keep the car cleaned out.

A suggestion on working projects from magazines: Have a notebook (actually, mine has tabs for different things, and I keep it in my stitching corner). List the name of the magazine, the name of the project and the page numbers.

This is the hard part. To be able to find the magazine, you have to have the magazine collection organized. Several years ago, I organized mine according to title and issue. Note I said several years ago. I haven't done it in awhile, so I have stacks of magazines in my craft room that need to be organized so that the notebook is actually usable. Sigh . . .

I would think, since you purchased the magazines/books, if you were to make working copies of the charts you like, for your personal use only, you could copy and then file them for your future use. If I'm mistaken, I'm sure someone will pipe in.

I also hate to take out patterns from a magazine. I did have them in magazine binders for years. Now I have a really tall file cabinet and I have 1 long drawer just with my mags. But my JCS ornament issues and JCS Halloween issues are in the tall magazine racks and sit on a shelf in my craft room.

I never stitch out of a magazine. I just photocopy the chart I want to stitch and stick the copy in a page protector. That;s what I stitch from.

Ugh about the car break ins! We had that happen when we lived in Delaware. All of the cars in the lot were vandalized but ours--my son had gotten car sick earlier in the day and I think the smell must have overpowered the thief when he opened the door! ROFLOL

Magazines--I used to keep a ton of them but got brutal and pared down a LOT. I've only kept my SANQs, the JCS ornament issues, and the JCS and other mags with designs that I KNOW I will stitch--and I've left those intact.

for the patterns I want to do out of magazines I put a sticky tab on the page I won't necessarily know which is which but it will direct me to A pattern I want to do.

I use Post It notes to mark patterns in magazines that I want to stitch or have stitched. Use a color code method for better organization ;o)

I do my thing and you do yours. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, then it is beautiful. If not, it can’t be helped--Frederick Perls
